About Shift7.Studio

Shift7.Studio is an adventurous creative agency in Brooklyn, NY. We help ambitious brands, nonprofits & people tell their stories & connect with people in meaningful ways.

We work across brand, design, experiences, video, and digital. As a multi-disciplinary studio, we see the full 360° view of how design can be used to integrate a company or organization’s visual identity and communications for the greatest impact. Our strategic and creative process is rooted in wide-ranging curiosity, rigorous research, and playful experimentation.

Like mountain guides, our goal is to shepherd our clients to new summits—pushing ourselves and our partners to break uncharted ground, while remaining secure in the knowledge that we have the experience and expertise to complete the expedition.

The Shift7 Manifesto:

  • We enthusiastically take calculated risks, but we are not reckless. Our best work happens when we are beyond the edge of our comfort zone, doing things we’ve never done in ways we’ve never done them. Design problems are more like boulder problems than math problems; there is rarely a singular path or solution. Sometimes the journey is pleasant, sometimes it’s strenuous—but we appreciate it as we would a hike which passes through both idyllic meadows and challenging terrain. Everyone has access to the same tools—we try to find unique ways of using them. Everything we do eventually ends up on a computer, but our best work rarely starts there.

  • Asking better questions results in better answers. We use every project as an opportunity to learn, explore, research and experiment, letting the work take us places we haven’t been before. We fight mediocrity at every turn. “Good enough” never is. We improvise, adapt, freestyle, iterate, and make work that means something.

  • Humans are pattern-making beings who make sense of the world through stories. If there isn’t a story, people will make one up for themselves. Our work always begins with determining what the ideal narrative is. Everything communicates—if something doesn’t mean anything, that’s exactly what it will communicate it means: nothing.

  • We question conventional wisdom and seek to understand the context at micro- and macro-levels, and in between. Our work starts with determining who you are talking to; what you are telling them; where are they receiving the message; how you want them to respond; and most importantly: why they should care. This provides us with a boost to launch into the design development phase with velocity and push past the expected and into the spectacular.

  • We don’t have a style, we have a method. Our work elevates our clients and makes an impact through thoughtful problem solving and compelling visual storytelling that creates meaning and adds value. The world is filled with junk—we try not to add to it.

  • We build systems that are cohesive, but not rigid; that have enough flexibility to adapt across touchpoints and mediums. Craft of paramount importance. We consider the full range of how a designed system identity is experienced when it is applied. We prototype and test; then work closely with vendors to execute flawlessly.

  • Good client relationships are a partnership; great clients relationships often become friendships. But our true clients are not our client, they are really our client’s customers and audience. If the work we do doesn’t resonate with the end audience, it doesn’t serve anyone. We work collaboratively with our clients to understand their audience, and how best to move them. Sometimes this means pushing past what our clients think they want, to get them what they really need. Which sometimes means result isn’t what we might have thought we wanted at the outset either.

Our Process:

SURVEY

Learn the terrain

At the outset of our adventure together, we work with our partners to learn the terrain through dialog, research & preparation. Sometimes our path will follow an established route with the intention of ascending better or faster; other times we may be entering uncharted territory to explore and discover new pathways, vistas & goals. By studying the terrain, we plan the best route with the highest chance of success.

EQUIP

Choose the right tools for the journey

As any experienced adventurer knows, you must choose the right gear and equipment for the expedition. Based on the terrain we will enter, the obstacles we may encounter, and the peaks we will scale, our team scopes the correct set of tools and outputs for the journey ahead & the goals we have set together. Our toolbelt includes branding, digital, print and video. For a full list, see the Services page.

EXPLORE

Work through the problem

With our plan in hand and the proper gear at our disposal, we set off on our journey together. As every route is different, it may be direct, favoring speed and efficiency; or obscure, filled with switchbacks and ambiguity that requires fortitude and courage. Regardless, we push forward, working our way through the obstacles, solving the problems we encounter, and seeking the joy in discovery and invention.

SEND

Flawless execution for maximum success

After solving the problems we encounter on the journey, we reach the summit together, whether that is shipping files to print, publishing on the web, or overseeing the installation of graphics in the built environment.
